slavery, what was it? it was forced labor in the southern u.s. why was it needed? it was needed because it was good for the southern economy. why was it a cause to the civil war? it was a cause to the civil war because, north and the south economics differed. the south relied on the slavery for farming, so they could make money to live off of. the person and why, Harriet Tubman - she was famous because of the abolitionist who helped free the slaves by using the "underground railroad". event and why, the invention of the cotton-gin by Eli Whitney increased the demon for cotton, which increased the need for slavery.
states rights
what was it? the states wanted the rights to make their own decisions about issues like slavery. who wanted them? the south wanted them. why did it cause fighting? sectionalism devolved. people no longer saw themselves as "Americans". the person and why, Lincoln wanted to free slaves in all states, the south thought this gave the nation too much power. 2 events and why, one event is, the addition of Missouri caused problems because then the northern states and the southern states weren't even. they had to compromise - made Missouri a slave state, added main as a free state. the second reason was south Carolina seceded from the union when Lincoln became president.
